Today we received the sad news of the death of
Library Commission Chairperson Martha Darlington, one of the most devoted,
hard-working, long standing friends that the Burlington County Library
System has ever had. She passed away this morning after a year long battle
with cancer. Martha never tired of working to promote libraries,
particularly in Burlington County. We were extremely fortunate to have had
such a wonderful person as our advocate. She began serving libraries as a
Friend of the Pemberton Community Library 50 years ago, and has served as
a County Library Commissioner since 1976, as Commission Chair since 1978.
That is 28 years of unpaid service to our library and the people of
Burlington County, a pretty amazing
commitment. She will always be fondly remembered as one of the best
friends our library has ever had.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Martha
Darlington will be held on Saturday, January 8, 2005 at 11:00 AM at the
Moorestown Friends (Quaker) Meeting House at 118 E. Main Street,
Moorestown, NJ.
For those who wish to send cards to her husband
Tom and family, their address is P.O. Box 156, New Lisbon, NJ 08064.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of
the Burlington County Library, 5 Pioneer Blvd., Westampton, NJ 08060 or to
Samaritan Hospice, 5 Eves Drive, Suite 300, Marlton, NJ 08053.

In addition to all of her service to BCLS detailed below, Martha was an
original and long term SJRLC Board member, Officer, Planning Committee
Member, wonderful person and dear friend. She really made her mark on so
